Catchup
It's not really worth recapping the few months I've missed prior to the upgrade! However, for the record...both Nick and Laurie appeared in the series finale. Here's a promo pic of Laurie in character, and another of Nick and Laurie behind the scenes. Screen captures will go into the image galleries once they go back up. Laurie has also been up to a few other things - get the details at Leading Lady. Nick has been keeping a pretty low profile. (June 1, 2002)
Nick's Reprise
Well, never say never. A few days after our last update, the end of The X Files was announced. The series will cease to air at the end of Season 9. However, Nick has indicated that he has been approached to appear in the series finale - and that he has treated the approach favourably. No word on whether Laurie has been approached, but it's worth considering that this all happened just after our interview with Frank Spotnitz. It's not impossible that that discussion got his brain cells ticking over! Cross your fingers for a better finale for our fantastic duo! (February 14, 2002)
A Coup For The Ratcave
Frank Spotnitz, executive producer for The X Files, President of 1013, and the writer of many of the X Files episodes featuring our duo, graciously spoke to Blondie's Ratcave at length about Krycek, Marita, and his own future. This is an incredible gift to Skampers, and also a wonderful gesture of validation of our own niche and of fans generally. As far as I can tell, this is the first time that someone involved in that level of production has agreed to speak with a fan site. We're very fortunate to have been given this opportunity, and very lucky to have been given such warmth and openness in such an in-depth interview. Read it here. (February 14, 2002)
An Era Ends
It's fairly clear, sadly, that our era has come to an end, at least as far as onscreen activity is concerned. Scuttlebutt is that 1013 asked Nick to reprise his role of Krycek in replicant form, and that Nick refused; and Laurie has stated publicly in TV Guide and other places that she believes Marita has had her last hurrah as well. It's been pretty obvious for a while that both actors have moved on to other paths, so this is sad but not unexpected. We do not expect this to represent an end to Skamper creativity. Fiction and art are still in existence, and the Krycek/Marita category got a lot of activity in the Spookys. Although this site went without updates due to real-life pressures for several months recently, this is not the end of Blondie's Ratcave, either. As long as there is fic, I will archive it. As long as there is art, I will archive it. As long as there are eligible stories, I will continue to support the Ratcave Spookys. My fellow webmistresses are also committed to continuing in the fandom - both The Mating Habits Of Rats and The Hellhole are being revamped and will return soon, and The True Love Of The X Files has had a recent overhaul. (January 14, 2002)
Laurie Update
Laurie has had rave reviews for her work in The Majestic (sadly, however, the film has otherwise been subject to considerable criticism). She has had several offers for new projects and is currently considering her options. The film was overlooked in the Golden Globes but it is still thought that she might score an Outstanding Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. For more information on Laurie's publicity in the light of The Majestic, please see Leading Lady. (January 14, 2002)
Merchandising Alerts
EBay trading in Nick and Laurie merchandise remains steady. There are many For Your Consideration trade ads promoting Laurie for an Oscar nomination and a few The Majestic press kits (score a press kit if you can - these are fabulous), and some gorgeous photos of Nick from the Oceans Eleven premiere. The supply of Laurie autographed trading cards has all but dried up, as have some of her movies, but Physical Evidence and Pathfinder is still showing up regularly. Nick movies are in shorter supply than usual right now, so keep your eyes open for those. His movie Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye is now available on DVD, so it's worth trying to pick up one of those new from the usual places. (January 14, 2002)
Skamper Fandom
Yes, that was my name you saw in the fan tribute in the opening credits of 9x03 Daemonicus, and Krycek/Marita writer Josie (Eisoj) appeared in the credits of 9x07 Trust No 1. Laurie Holden mentioned Krycek/Marita writer Elaine Duncan in an E! interview (Lanie ran the very first Laurie Holden fan site, years ago). Generalist fanfic rec sites have featured Krycek/Marita fic recently, including IOHO (CGB's If You Need) and The Enigmatic Doctor's Fanfictions Favourites (Searing Snow). The Ratcave Spookys were well-supported, with lots of interest from the voters (see Spookys for more details). My new site/list The Harem has seen considerable activity recently, with lots of Marita fic with Skamper content. (January 14, 2002)
Other Projects
Nick has just finished filming a new film, A Shot In The Face in Regina, Canada. Thanks to Nicklea.com, Michelle, and others. (September 11, 2001)
Pop Culture!
Alex and Marita have made pop icon status, at least at one television review site. BoobToob.Net said of the series Angel, "Sparks will fly between Kate and Lindsay...as they kick off an illicit affair. Think Alex Krycek and Marita Covarrubias -- you know, if Krycek was short and couldn't act and Marita was a whiny little bitch." (September 11, 2001)
Media Alerts
Nick Lea appeared in a short article in MacLean's, a Canadian lifestyle magazine, on August 20. A small picture from Lunch With Charles also appeared. A scene from The Majestic with Laurie Holden appeared on Entertainment Tonight on August 31. The movie was tipped as an Oscar contender. (September 6, 2001)
Nick Teaching
The Province reports that Nick will soon be teaching at the new Lyric School Of Actors. Congratulations, Nick! (July 1, 2001)
Fic Recognition
More Krycek/Marita fic recognition, with M. Sebasky's House Of Hope Is Built On Ash, Rachel Anton's Lilies Know A Ghostly Birth, Maidenjedi's Good Intentions, and Deslea's Healer, The Wrong Man, Dream A Crystal Moon, and Hands commended at rec sites including IOHO, A Quiet Place To Read, the Purity challenge, Lara's Favorites, and House Of Fanfic. (July 1, 2001)
Merchandise Alert
Nicholas Lea's film Lunch With Charles is now available on VCD at full running time (110mins), with Mandarin subtitles from Longshong, or open-region DVD as a cut version (92min) from Poker Industries. The consensus from those who have seen both say the VCD is better, although the sound quality is fairly average. All agree it's a great film well worth buying in whatever format. A copy of Earth Angels, the never-aired pilot Nick filmed in April, has been doing the EBay rounds and making the seller an enormous profit. Please exercise caution as the seller appears to have misrepresented the length and quality of the tape to other buyers. INKWORKS Laurie Holden autograph cards are appearing on EBay, with a fairly stable going price of about $30US. The supply of these appears to be drying up. Laurie's Physical Evidence continues to show up regularly on EBay, as do Nick's films Vertical Limit and The Raffle, but others such as XTro, Expect No Mercy, Pathfinder, and OAT have been in shorter supply than usual. Be warned, an EBay vendor has been selling Region 6 Vertical Limit DVDs without disclosing regions. Be sure to check your region before buying any DVD on EBay. In another EBay scam, Steve and Barbara Gaddis, trading as picard159, have sold at least two Nick Lea autographed items which, according to Nick's agent, are not consistent with Nick's signature in five respects and therefore must be considered fake. (Thanks, Kand). Nicklea.com ran a charity auction to celebrate Nick's birthday and raised heaps of funds - congratulations! (June 14/July 15, 2001)
Laurie In The Press
The June 29-July 6 edition of Entertainment Weekly has named Laurie among its annual "It" list. She has a two-page spread and is quoted as saying, "I'm in full denial about Krycek...He's my partner in crime! He can't be dead!" Laurie, we totally agree. Congratulations on getting such fabulous recognition! Thanks to Amy and others. In related news, IMDB reports that The Majestic will open in the US on 21 December 2001. Meanwhile, the SF Chronicle reported on May 25 that Laurie had been filming in Mendocino county and had dined with co-star Carrey and director Darabont. (June 24, 2001)
Loving Laurie...Maybe
The National Enquirer recently alleged a romantic involvement between Laurie Holden and her The Majestic co-star Jim Carrey. We chose not to report on the story at the time due to the dubious credibility of the source. This story seems laid to rest by Jim Carrey's comment on the subject in TIME magazine - "She's very pretty, but no." Thanks to Sally-Ann. (June 22, 2001)
Happy Birthday Nick!
Happy birthday to Nicholas Lea, who turned 39 today. Hopefully 2001 will be your best year yet! (June 22, 2001)
Nicholas Lea And The Leo Awards
This is somewhat old news, but I have only recently tracked down a working URL. Nicholas Lea was nominated for the Best Performance (Male) in a Feature Length Drama in the prestigious Leo Awards for his performance as Matthew in Lunch With Charles. Callum Keith Rennie won the award for his work in Suspicious River. Kand's french site Nick_Lea.fr reports that LWC is also under consideration for the International Film Festival in Seattle. (June 22, 2001)
Nicholas Lea Birthday Project 2001
Blondie's Ratcave is pleased to sponsor an all-new fundraising program, the Nicholas Lea Birthday Project. For a limited time, you can buy an exclusive Nicholas Lea mousemat designed by Deslea. Profits will be donated to Nick's preferred charity, the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, for Nick's birthday on June 22; however, because of the late start to the project, we will continue until the end of July. We will then launch the Laurie Holden Birthday Project in a similar vein, and continue in six-monthly cycles. Don't forget, if your budget doesn't run to merchandise, you can always donate to Best Friends direct. (June 1, 2001)
The Votes Are In, And We Are Skampers!
You had your say, and more than half of you voted for Skampers as the nickname for our end of the fandom. To celebrate, we've created a Skampers Corner, filled with free goodies. You don't have to link these back to the Ratcave, though it would be nice. Use as many as you like, and spread the news far and wide. (June 1, 2001)
