The Great Nick Scam
In the aftermath of the XF Season 8 Finale, there was a flood of emails, supposedly from Nicholas Lea to individual fans. Leigh of Nicklea.com contacted Nick's agent and confirmed that this was a hoax. The only verified message from Nick to his fans in recent times is this one from the Nicklea.com message boards (contains season 8 finale spoilers). (May 25, 2001)

Blondie's Ratcave Featured At About.Com
Blondie's Ratcave was a featured site at About.Com's Featured X Files Weekly Links for the week of April 2-8, 2001. David Swinney wrote, "This excellent site focuses on Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea) and Marita Covarrubias (Laurie Holden); you will find many exclusive photographs of the pair here, along with character-related fan fiction and multimedia." (May 25, 2001)

Lunch With Charles
Okay, so it isn't really news anymore...but I just saw Lunch With Charles, one of Nicholas Lea's recent works, and can't recommend it enough. It's funny and sweet and, while resorting to some old cliches, does so in the nicest possible way. Do see it if you get a chance. I'll be putting up a couple of hundred screen captures in my next update. (May 25, 2001)

Give Us A Name, Already!
The email list alexnmarita has been discussing (and bemoaning) the lack of a name for Krycek/Marita shippers. Between Shippers, Skippers, Slashers, Slippers, Dippers, and Skinny-Dippers, it seems like everyone has one! So we brainstormed for names, and voted on a shortlist. The finalists are - Schippers (the first and arguably the only shippers whose partnership was consummated onscreen), Skampers (with an M and a K), and KryM'ers (with an apostrophe to avoid Mulder confusion). Smackers was originally on the poll after a miscount, and I am leaving it there and allowing the votes for it to stand. Now, we're throwing open the polls. Go here and have your say. The winning name will be officially embraced by the Ratcave, and we'll spread it far and wide until everybody knows our name. (May 21, 2001)

Nick In Variety!
The May 21 LA edition of Variety featured a half-page ad, sponsored by fans congratulating Nick on seven years with The X Files and wishing him well for other projects. This is fabulous exposure for Nick and a great tribute. Excess funds will go to Nick's favourite charity, the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Thanks to everyone who co-ordinated this fabulous program. (May 21, 2001)

Krycek/Marita Kudos!
More mainstream recognition for Krycek/Marita creativity! Congratulations to CGB, whose story The Fugue has been recommended in several places recently, including Lara's Favourites, which also recommended Deslea's fic Hands. Deslea's story The Wrong Man was reviewed by My XF Voice, and her Krycek/Marita and other art led to her being named artist of the month at the X Files Original Art Archive. (May 21, 2001)

Merchandising Update
The run on Laurie autograph redemption cards from the INKWORKS trading card packs continues. Trade started out at about $50US; supply and demand have levelled off and you can now expect to pick them up for under $30. Please note that the supply on these redemption cards has tapered off noticeably in the last fortnight, but autograph brokers seem to be picking up the slack. Meanwhile, The Majestic paraphernalia is doing the EBay rounds, with newspapers and photographs of filming up for grabs. Hats worn by Laurie in the film have been the subject of heated bidding. On the Nick front, there is the usual stream of candid photographs from various social events and a steady supply of Vertical Limit DVDs. There has also been an unsual number of Once A Thief DVDs and The Raffle videos - you might be able to pick these up cheap with the shift in supply/demand. The almost total absence of Nick autographed paraphernalia continues, representing a major shift from this time last year; but it is possible that supply will increase as vendors capitalise on the events of Existence. Finale Spoilers!
We have major spoilers for the season finale, which you can read here. (26 April 2001)

Fandom News!
There have been really interesting discussions about Krycek on RATales and Glass Onion this week, as well as an interesting discussion of MaritaTorture and Fort Marlene on the latter. The NickLea.com Messageboard has had some interesting pro-Krycek/Marita commentary (beware of major spoilers). Finally, I would like to really encourage any Krycek/Marita writers to check out the Purity Virtual Summer Season, a series of fanfic challenges which will "air" on a weekly basis during the XF off-season. SpookyChick has been really supportive of us, and this high-profile program could be a real boost to our profile if we put our collective minds to Krycek/Marita themed responses. The challenges are supporting-character-friendly, so there are a lot of opportunities. Thanks to SpookyChick for inviting our visitors to participate! (26 April 2001)

Merchandising Alert!
There has been a run on Laurie Holden merch at Ebay this month, including newpapers from the town in which she is filming her movie and autograph redemption cards from the INKWORKS trading card packs. Nicholas Lea merch has been a little quieter, but there are a lot of pre-release Vertical Limit DVD (Region 1) auctions, some at very good prices. (26 April 2001)

Angelic Nick!
Nicholas Lea is currently filming an NBC pilot in Toronto, called EARTH ANGELS. It's an hour-long series from acclaimed horror novelist Anne Rice, and is reportedly a good-versus-evil story about warring angels on Earth. Nick plays "David," the devil's son. It's a presentation pilot only; there's no guarantee that it will be picked up as a series. But we can hope! Filming is supposed to run from March 25 to April 3, 2001. Thanks to Isa. (1 April 2001)

Krycek/Marita Recognised Again!
Hot on the heels of the representation of Krycek/Marita fic in the 2000 Spooky Awards and the FOX awards, Deslea's story Hands (available in Fiction) has received recommendations from A Quiet Place To Read and Museans. It also took third place in the Angst category of this year's Believers In The Truth (B.I.T.T.) Awards. Not My Lover received a B.I.T.T. commendation. Meanwhile, Rachel Anton has been getting recommendations all over the place for her recent Doggett/Marita forays, Shadow Wife and Trouble Me With You. But, shh! Don't tell Ratboy... (1 April 2001)

Fandom Developments
There have been a few developments in the fandom in the last week or so. The alexnmarita mailing list, run by The Hellhole, has taken off a bit after being dormant for some time. It's shaping up to be a fun place to be. Also, Lauryn has confirmed our agreement to sponsor a Spooky award for Marita characterisation (along with the Krycek/Marita romance one already agreed to). Blondie's Ratcave is now among the top rated links at the XF Links search engine at duchovny.net, and is also at number 4 on the X Files Top 50 sites list. Many Krycek webpages were lost in the so-called Tripod massacre; but at this stage Tripod still claims it was an error, so some of those pages may hopefully reappear. There have been interesting discussions of supporting characters, including Krycek and Marita, on the new alternative-fanfic mailing list Glass Onion this week, too. (25 March 2001)

Vote For The Kiss!
The Official X Files Magazine (Spring 2001) wants to know which onscreen kiss was the best. Now, we know the shippers will be going crazy over a certain kiss in Millennium; so lets give them a run for their money! Write to The X-Files Official Magazine, Ballot Box, 1515 West 22nd Street Suite 475, Oak Brook, IL 60523. Thanks to Catseye. (12 March 2001)

Trading Card Bonanza!
INKWORKS will release a new 100-card set of X Files trading cards in April, covering seasons 4-5. There will be randomly inserted autograph cards of Laurie Holden, as well as Chris Carter, Bruce Harwood, Jerry Hardin, and more. (24 Feb 2001)

Ebay Madness!
Still on Laurie Holden autographs, a complete lack of them over a six month period resulted in a bidding war over one on EBay in January, with a final bid of $255US seven seconds before the auction closed. This resulted in a small flood of them, and their increased availability has driven the average sale price down to $50. On a related note, Nicholas Lea autographs, once a common sight on Ebay, have dropped off. Perhaps there is a shortage of availability after the run of them following Vertical Limit's release. (24 Feb 2001)

Wanted: Nick Lea - Dead Or Alive!
We have reasonably reliable confirmation that Nick will appear in XF 8x15, Dead Alive, which will air in the US in April; Laurie is not in the episode, but Frank Spotnitz has confirmed she will appear a little later in the season. Watch for some cool scenes between Nick and Mitch Pileggi. According to AlexxoF, who has seen the script, he has a significant amount of dialogue this time. Thanks to AlexxoF for this information. (20 Feb 2001)

Majestic Laurie!
Laurie Holden has just landed her first starring role in a big-budget feature. She will play opposite Jim Carrey in The Majestic, an exploration of anti-Communist Hollywood in the 1950s. It will be directed by Frank Darabont, who also directed The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. The movie begins filming this month and is tentatively slated for release towards the end of 2001. Laurie has had lead roles in several films prior to this, including Teklab: Tekwar, Pathfinder, Expect No Mercy and Past Perfect; but this is a whole new ballgame in terms of exposure and prestige. Thanks to Isa, Sally-Ann and others. (12 Feb 2001)
